One Room Challenge 2016: Week 3

Last week, I shared the beginning stages of the transformation of our bright red laundry/mud room.  This week’s post will focus on a few functional and decorative changes I’ve made to the space.

Greetings from the air over the English Channel!  We have spent the past few days exploring London and are headed to the northern coast of France next to visit the D-Day beaches in Normandy.

Here’s a fun fact:  Accessing Blogger from a wireless connection in France causes the entire page, with the exception of my own text, to show up in French, which is a language I do not speak.  I can pick out a few words here and there, but even though I’ve been using Blogger for several years now and the page looks identical, except in French…I feel a little lost.  I’m also running off of about 5 hours of sleep from our late last night in London and early flight so don’t quite have the brain power to solve the problem.  So please forgive any weird formatting!

But the One Room Challenge must go on in spite of bad hotel wireless internet (bad internet, not bad hotels!) and foreign languages.
Here’s a reminder of what the room looked like at the end of Week 2:

This week’s first change is a somewhat functional one: the console table I found on Wayfair.  I’ve never used the site before, but it was very easy.  The shipping was free, as the catchy/annoying tune in the commercial states, and the table arrived quickly and in good condition.  Even better, it was VERY easy to assemble.  I wound up spending more on the table than I would have preferred, but I decided to go ahead with it in the interest of time: I didn’t have weeks to spend circumnavigating thrift and antique stores for just the right beautiful wooden table, and I really wanted to get rid of that metal shelf!  The table came with a drawer and a low shelf that I could put the dirty towel basket and shoe bin on, plus it’s high enough to put a couple pairs of running shoes underneath.  The laundry basket fits perfectly on top.  By the way, Wayfair in no way paid me to say that or gave me any discount on the table (though it was listed for less the day I bought it than it is today – yay!).

Fortunately for me, the only table I could find that I really liked was the perfect size AND under the allotted budget!

The shoe bin you see here is one I found on clearance at Target a few years ago, but it didn’t match the rest of the room.  When I made the Roman shade, I used some excess fabric to cover the bin and it coordinates quite well now.

Pretty AND functional. Win win!

The next change is my new cabinet knobs.  I had spray painted the old ones several different colors over the past few years, but I wanted something shinier, so I went for these glass knobs from Lowe’s, and grabbed an extra one to replace the tiny standard one on the drawer of my new table.  In addition to the new cabinet knobs, the doorknobs have now been spray painted brushed nickel.  The cabinet hinges have been sprayed brushed nickel to coordinate, but the door hinges are still on the to-do list.

Last up: a new mini trash can.  It’s tiny, but was very inexpensive.  It’s covered so the dogs can’t get into it and has a step-on mechanism for the lid, so it’s quite convenient.

Thanks for checking in this week!  Make sure to visit the other guest bloggers to see what they’re up to!
